Block of derelict buildings, Shields Rd, Byker
All the shops in this block have closed and the buildings are deteriorating quickly, and badly. Assume that at some time this will be demolished for some development, but no indications yet what it will be, or when. Shields Rd is a struggling urban community that mainly serves people living in Byker and Heaton, for the sake of the other business's along the rd the sooner this can be progressed the better.

East End Community Centre and Ethel Austins, Shields Rd, Byker
The new Community Centre opened this year and is attached to a lovely five storey brick building that was originally Wilks Furniture. A really striking and attractive art deco style design. The ground floor is now Ethel Austins clothes shop and the other four levels are in residential use.

Decoflair, corner of Shields Rd and Heaton Park Rd, Byker
The yellow posters in the window are encouraging people to shop local and support their local businesses. Couldn't agree more, these urban shopping streets are a crucial part of local infrastructure that brings employment into the area and keeps the money local.

Was Heavenly Manna, Shields Rd, Byker (9/13)
A series of photographs of cafes and places to eat in on or just off Shields Rd, Byker. Included as it used to be a great little cafe. The shop with the black sign has just reopened as a health food shop, but has been derelict for over 2 years. Before then it was Heavenly Manna, typical fry-up cafe by day, and Caribbean food at night. And before then it was Rumbletums, did great scrambled egg and mushrooms on toast.
