Beavans, Shields Rd, Byker (1/4)
As described in the local area plan, Beavans is a high quality commercial building and contrasts with the new developments on Shields Road. The building reflects the prosperity of the area in the era in which it was built. It is Edwardian in origin and consists of brick and stone with original stained glass windows situated on its attractive upper level facade. The frontage also contains the original name plates ‘F. Beavan Ltd’, ‘Ironmongers’ and ‘Furnishers’. The company had a good standing in the community.
Has been under conversion for some time, but the scaffolding and major works have completed. The upper floors have been converted into flats which will be social housing - you can just see on the roof some interesting glass detail which looks is if it may form some sort of roof garden or conservatory. Hope to be able to have a good look around inside when the project completes.

Beavans, side detail, Shields Rd, Byker (4/4)
Detail of the faded but I think original signage of the store. Looks as if this will be left following the refurbishment of the building.

Beavans, Shields Rd, Byker (3/4)
Detail of the facade showing the original name plates ‘F. Beavan Ltd’, ‘Ironmongers’ and ‘Furnishers’. The BHF shop underneath has been open for about 3 months and it's good to see the building being brought back into some use.

Was Heavenly Manna, Shields Rd, Byker (9/13)
A series of photographs of cafes and places to eat in on or just off Shields Rd, Byker.
Included as it used to be a great little cafe. The shop with the black sign has just reopened as a health food shop, but has been derelict for over 2 years. Before then it was Heavenly Manna, typical fry-up cafe by day, and Caribbean food at night. And before then it was Rumbletums, did great scrambled egg and mushrooms on toast.
