This gate in the walled garden at Wallington seems always to be locked. I suspect it may always have been ornamental rather than functional. Anyhow you may not want to go through it regardless as the area just on the outside appears to have become a horse manure dung heap.

Old Milestone by the River Wansbeck, Wallington
Carved stone post by the UC road, in parish of WALLINGTON DEMESNE (CASTLE MORPETH District), opposite Barn Flat, near the Wallington Gardens, on grass verge, on South side of road. Cambo stone, erected by the Ponteland turnpike trust in the 18th century. Inscription reads:- : To / NEW / CASTLE / 19 / Miles. : : To / CAMBO / 1 / Mile. : Grade II listed. The 'Owl House', Wallington
A potting shed behind the conservatory (Winter Garden) in Wallington's walled garden. The stone Owl on the roof refers to the crest of the Calverley family; Sir Walter Calverley married into the Blackett family of Wallington circa;1706/7.
