Shaftoe Trust School
A free grammar school was built on this site at the end of the 17th century by the Reverend John Shaftoe's Charity established "for the education and instruction of youth in the knowledge of God's word, and for the maintenance of poor distressed families". Local celebrity the artist John Martin attended the school beetween 1794 and 1803; some of his earliest works were drawings made of the school whilst he was a pupil. The present building dates from 1910 and now operates as Haydon Bridge First School.
