Coal Staithe Spout, Tyne Dock, South Shields
At Tyne Dock there were four coal staithes with a total of 42 spouts and opened in 1859. All the coal was gathered from surrounding mines and sent to London or exported. By 1949 two of the staithes had been demolished and only one remained when I had a summer job there from 1965-68 (college holidays). The final staithe along with the famous Tyne Dock Arches were demolished in the 1970s.
