Taken at the junction with Lawe Road. This is close to the Roman site Arbeia, hence the name 'Trajan'.

View to the reconstructed Commanding Officer's house at Arbeia Roman Fort, Lawe Top, South Shields
My first visit to Arbeia. The reconstructions look amazing already. We can barely perceive the glory that was Rome. These help that process start.

Roman Fort
Arbeia Roman Fort, originally built to house a garrison which guarded the entrance to the River Tyne. Four miles east of the end of Hadrian's Wall, at South Shields, Arbeia soon became the military supply base for the 17 forts along the Wall.

Part of the replica barrack block at Arbeia Roman Fort, South Shields
A Centurion had his quarters at the head of each block, with his men housed in shared barracks, with bunkbeds etc over the remainder of the block. The units were obviously close-knit, disciplined, tough, committed and professional - qualities that set the very best true soldiers apart. We can obviously only make an educated guess at what their living conditions were like, but their lives must have been tough, brief and unpredictable.
