Ship in dry dock, South Shields, 1977
This is the 46000DWT bulk carrier 'La Sierra', built for Buries Markes Ltd. in Belfast in 1966. She is pictured in the dry dock at Tyne Dock in January 1979 where she was undergoing repairs.

Tyne Dock, 1993
The former shipbuilding and repair dry dock at Tyne Dock standing derelict in 1993. This makes a poignant comparison with my other submission for this square showing a ship in dock for repairs in 1977.

Captains Wharf Old Dry Dock now a feature
This was obviously one of the dry docks that has now been made into a feature by being filled with water - which is constantly aerated by pumps - and has had these Stainless Steel Galleons put in for interest.

'Fleet' by Irene Brown, Captains Wharf
'Fleet' is a collection of seven stainless steel C19th collier brigs in full sail set in the flooded former dry dock (formerly Market Dock) among the new housing development at Captains Wharf next to the River Tyne at South Shields. They were installed in 2004. The brightly polished ships reflect patterns of moving sky and water and give the impression of a fleet heading out to sea.

Garden in former graving dock, Broad Landing
The classic form of dry dock, properly known as graving dock, is a narrow basin, usually made of earthen berms and concrete, closed by gates or by a caisson, into which a vessel may be floated and the water pumped out, leaving the vessel supported on blocks.
The keel blocks as well as the bilge block are placed on the floor of the dock in accordance with the 'docking plan' of the ship. Routine use of dry docks is for the 'graving' i.e. the cleaning, removal of barnacles and rust, and re-painting of ships' hulls.
