Opened in 1905 as 'Coxbench' by the North Eastern Railway on the line from Gosforth to Ponteland, this station closed to passengers in 1929. It was rebuilt and reopened as 'Fawdon' by the Tyne & Wear Metro in 1980, with the line now going to (Newcastle) Airport.
View east towards Wansbeck Road and Gosforth. Coxbench station had both platforms located on this side of the level crossing, Fawdon Metro station was opened with one on each side of the crossing.

Fawdon Metro station, Tyne and Wear Metro
When the Tyne and Wear Metro was opened in 1980, it was in itself an innovative scheme - the first modern light rail in Britain. But it was also planned to be just a part of a completely integrated public transport system for the whole of Tyne and Wear, which would provide through ticketing and seamless travel all over the County. However, the Thatcher government's doctrinaire insistence on privatisation completely scuppered this aspect of the Metro, and buses began to compete with Metro for cross-river traffic instead of providing the necessary co-ordinating services at interchange points. Nevertheless, the Metro has remained very popular, and traffic has again been increasing in recent years.

Level crossing at Fawdon, Tyne and Wear Metro
From the photograph, there do not seem to be any gates at this crossing. Whether this feature persists to the present is not known to me.
