'Vikings', Grange Road, Jarrow
Sculpture by Colin Davidson Image, unveiled on 17th February 1962 outside the Jarrow Shopping Centre (later renamed the Viking Centre) to a storm of local protest. 40 years later, in 2000, the Vikings had become a Jarrow landmark and people have called for it to be repaired and preserved http://www.shieldsgazette.com/news/REPAIR-VIKING-STATUE.626175.jp Jarrow was invaded by the Vikings in 794AD although they were beaten back at first before the area was eventually colonised. South Shields locals call the two Viking figures Plum and Duff http://southshieldsdailyphoto.wordpress.com/2007/08/26/the-viking-shopping-centre-jarrow/ Behind, repairs are being made to the spire of Christ Church Image

Jarrow: the Vikings
These Vikings were erected in 1961 by the Arndale Property Trust, on the opening of Britain's first Arndale Centre on the site now occupied by the Viking Shopping Centre. Arndale Centres derive their name from the Trust's founders, Arnold Hagenbach and Sam Chippendale. Their first centre was intended to be in Bradford but delays in lease matters meant a delay there, and thus Jarrow's was the first.
