Civic Hall in Ellison Street Jarrow Built as the Mechanics Institute in 1864 by subscription by the Palmers Shipyard workers for recreation for the workers As rumour has it even though it's a listed building, the council are going to demolish it in 2010 and build offices on the site Can this be legal when it was paid for by subscription by the Palmers Workforce as a gift to the working class of the town?

'Vikings', Grange Road, Jarrow
Sculpture by Colin Davidson Image, unveiled on 17th February 1962 outside the Jarrow Shopping Centre (later renamed the Viking Centre) to a storm of local protest. 40 years later, in 2000, the Vikings had become a Jarrow landmark and people have called for it to be repaired and preserved http://www.shieldsgazette.com/news/REPAIR-VIKING-STATUE.626175.jp Jarrow was invaded by the Vikings in 794AD although they were beaten back at first before the area was eventually colonised.
