Percy Gardens Cottages, Back Percy Gardens, Tynemouth
This row of buildings first appeared on the Ordnance Survey Six-Inch map of the area in 1898, and was probably built in the 1870s at the same time as the Grand Hotel and the houses in Percy Gardens. The Grand Hotel was initially built in 1872 as a summer residence for the Duchess of Northumberland although in 1877 it was converted into an hotel. One of the many early amenities of the hotel was that of, "good stabling", and that is what these cottages were originally used for. Even to this day, the Grand Hotel boasts that, "Car and motorbike garages are available at 'The Stables Garages' 30 metres from the hotel", a stone's throw from these cottages. Entrance, Grand Hotel, Grand Parade, Tynemouth
Built in 1872 to a design by Thomas Moore of Sunderland, who also designed the impressive 1848-Monkwearmouth Railway Station, this building was originally the summer residence of the Duchess of Northumberland. However, the building was converted into an hotel in 1877, and it is now a Grade II Listed building. The central door has carved spandrels, polished granite nook shafts and a heavy carved bracketed cornice on banded pilasters. Hope House, 47 Percy Gardens, Tynemouth
This double fronted house was built in 1875 as part of the Percy Gardens development https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6768929, although this property stands outside of the gated area facing north. During the 1914-18 conflict this property was in the ownership of the War Office, and was used as a command centre for the coastal defences, with an observation and range-finding post built into the roof of the house to control the guns on the River Tyne. In 1916 plans for a six storey tower, attached to the back
of the house, were drawn up although the tower was not constructed until the end of the conflict. The tower, known as number 47a Percy Gardens, was used again during the 1939-45 conflict. For a selection of detailed free to download walking routes in the area visit www.northtynesidewalks.co.uk
