Female Mallard and Chicks, West Allotment Pond
The mallard is a large and heavy looking duck with a long body, and a long and broad bill. The male has a dark green head, a yellow bill, and is mainly purple-brown on the breast and grey on the body, whilst the female (seen here) is mainly brown with an orange bill. The female can lay between eight to thirteen creamy white to greenish-buff spotless eggs, although it appears that only three ducklings have survived in this instance.
