Post Box, South Parade, Whitley Bay
This box dates from the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). The custom of including a royal cypher on post boxes dates back to the very earliest roadside boxes from the reign of Queen Victoria. There was no standard cypher used by the Post Office during this period until, in the 1880s, a consistent cypher began to be seen. Unlike the cyphers of proceeding monarchs, Queen Victoria’s cypher did not usually include a crown. This box was probably erected at some time between 1895 and 1901.

The centre of the town's night life. The left-hand side of the road is a continual sequence of venues, leading right down to the promenade.

The 70 bedroom hotel is on the corner of Whitley Bay Promenade and South Parade. Originally a small temperance hotel opened by the Waverley Hotel Company in 1906. The Waverley Hotel soon expanded to become a hotel of 150 bedrooms, said to be one of the largest and most up to date on the north-east coast with a heated garage and private tennis courts behind. In 1937 the hotel obtained a licence to sell alcohol for the first time and its name was changed to the Rex Hotel. It was the venue of a popular folk club and featured Gerry Rafferty, Billy Connolly, Ralph McTell and Lindisfarne early in their careers. As a small group of runners assembled for a half marathon to Newcastle. A full marathon was to catch up towards the finish having started from Morpeth. The M2N inaugural event. The half marathon was called N2N. A cycling option was C2N. Decades ago there was an annual road race on the 1st January of about 13.5 miles down the old Great North Road, the A1, from Morpeth to Newcastle. The number of entrants was never large by the standards of today's distance events. Health and Safety concerns got it stopped as it was largely on open roads. This year's event was designed to reintroduce the idea on modern safety first tracks for a larger number of entrants and with more options. I wasn't last, and got quite a few pictures along the way!
