Rex Hotel, Whitley Bay
The 70 bedroom hotel is on the corner of Whitley Bay Promenade and South Parade.
Originally a small temperance hotel opened by the Waverley Hotel Company in 1906. The Waverley Hotel soon expanded to become a hotel of 150 bedrooms, said to be one of the largest and most up to date on the north-east coast with a heated garage and private tennis courts behind. In 1937 the hotel obtained a licence to sell alcohol for the first time and its name was changed to the Rex Hotel. It was the venue of a popular folk club and featured Gerry Rafferty, Billy Connolly, Ralph McTell and Lindisfarne early in their careers.
