Local heroes in Ridley Park
The three cutout figures are part of a national artwork celebrating local heroes. They stand in Ridley Park beside National Cycle Network route 1 (Coast and Castles) and the Blyth Connection, a cycle path linking Blyth and Bedlington. From left to right, they represent: 1. Stan Laurel who had some of his first acting experiences at the Old Blyth Theatre Royal where his father was manager. He went on to appear in nearly 190 films, many with Oliver Hardy. 2.Guardsman Michael Sweeney who attended college in Blyth. He was deployed in Afghanistan where he was killed in 2010. 3. PC David Rathband who in the course of duty was shot and blinded in 2010 in the notorious Raoul Moat episode. He went on to found the Blue Lamp Foundation. David Rathband took his own life in 2012.
