Gates, Matfen
A pair of ornate early-C18th gate piers at the (former) west entrance to Matfen Hall (see here: Image]). They have shell niches and are topped by urn finials on scrolled brackets. The urns are decorated with faces and swags. Grade II* listed. The house is now a hotel and golf club with a modern, functional entrance. It's a pity that this entrance has been cast aside, it could have been a feature.

West Lodge to Matfen Hall & Gates, gatepiers and screen walls to West of Matfen Hall
West Lodge - a lodge building - was used to control access to the Matfen Hall estate from the 1830s when it was built. At this time the hall would have been the major employed in the area, and access would have been continually - if selectively - needed. The lodge is typical of many in the area; it is a mixture of fine ashlar stonework, slate brick and tile, wood and dressed stone. It displays an estate favourite of Gothic style bargeboards - something seen in the village. This is a Grade II Listed Building protected by law. http://www.keystothepast.info/article/10339/Site-Details?PRN=N21667 The gates, gate piers and boundary walls are of 18th and 19th centuries. They are ashlar and ironwork. The 18th century work is more Classical in style - with shell-shaped niches, friezes, and urns. The later work is more geometrical with the pyramidal caps ending in simpler gate piers. The gates of iron are of the later period. Both dates of material are combined and protected as a Listed Building protected by law from alterations and removals. These are Grade II Listed Buildings protected by law. http://www.keystothepast.info/article/10339/Site-Details?PRN=N21668
