'Swans in flight', Civic Centre
A bronze statue above one of the Civic Centre's quadrangle pools by David Wynne, 1968. It is based on Hans Hartvig Seedorff Pederson's 'The Swans from the North', a Scandinavian poetic work with the five swans representing five Scandinavian countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Finland. Swans in Flight Sculpture, Newcastle Civic Centre
Swans in Flight is a bronze sculpture by David Wynne commissioned for the opening of the Civic Centre in 1968 and located in the quadrangle in a pool of water. The swans represent the city's strong links with the Scandinavian countries Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland.

This photograph shows the 'Swans in Flight' sculpture which is in the courtyard of Newcastle Civic Centre. This bronze sculpture by the British artist, David Wynne (born 1926), was installed in the central courtyard of the Civic Centre in 1968. Courtyard, Newcastle Civic Centre
The internal courtyard space within Newcastle Civic Centre. The ground floor of the wing behind the Five Swans sculpture was, until recently, open and has been enclosed by glazing as part of the recent refurbishment of the centre. Image shows the sculpture from the space which is now enclosed. A gap, out of frame to the left, has been left to allow access into the central space.
