Bewick Court, a 21-storey tower block was built in 1969-71 and sits on a deck above the street, part of a daring scheme to create a 'two-level toon' with access roads below traffic-free pedestrian areas above. A piazza in front of the block leads to the back of the Central Library. From there walkways lead to M.E.A. House in Ellison Place. The passing trade up here on the walkways above John Dobson Street is limited but clearly word of mouth and local knowledge allows some businesses to survive.

This 77 m (253 ft) high 1960s faux-Bauhaus monstrosity dominates the central city skyline - see Image (photographed by Andrew Curtis). It has recently undergone a £4 million refurbishment and now contains around 130 flats. T Dan Smith, the leader of Newcastle City Council in the early 1960s, and the architect John Poulson, ended up in prison after a sensational trial in the early 1970s where it was revealed that corruption on a massive scale had taken place in awarding contracts and "easing" the passage of planning decisions. Newcastle is unusual, for a city of its size, for the relative absence of tall buildings from its centre. Most of its towers are residential and scattered around outside - this might be the most central. By T.K. Powell & Partners, 1969-71, but owing its present appearance to Red Box Design's 2000 remodelling. It is reflected in the library (Image]).

Constructed as part of the early 1970's redevelopment of Newcastle, the tower is built on a platform over John Dobson Street. the tower is residential and contains 133 apartments in its 19 storeys.
