View across the River Tyne, west of Newburn Bridge
On the left can be seen the Tyne Rowing Club Image with their steps down to the river. The Boathouse pub is on the right Image with the Newburn Hotel just to its left. There is a closer view here Image Compare with the photo from c1900 http://isee.gateshead.gov.uk/detail.php?t=objects&type=all&f=&s=ryton&record=122 The Boathouse public house is now the only surviving building in Water Row whose terrace used to extend along the river bank towards the Rowing Club House. George Stephenson worked at Water Row Pit from 1798 to 1801 Image The cottages at Water Row were cleared by Newburn Urban District Council as part of slum clearance in 1931-9.

Boathouse of Tyne Rowing Club
Rowing is a popular sport on the River Tyne. Adjacent to Hadrian's Way, a path from Wylam to Newcastle along the north bank of the Tyne which carries both Hadrian's Cycleway http://www.cycle-routes.org/HADRIANSCYCLEWAY/and Hadrian's Wall National Trail http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/hadrianswall/. In the distance is the "Boatman" public house.

Tyne Rowing Club, Newburn Riverside
The club was founded in 1852 and is amongst the oldest sporting clubs in England. The building here is the club's third boathouse and was opened on the 6th April 1957 by Viscount Runciman http://www.tynerowingclub.org/pages/history_16403.cfm The beard of the Tyne River God (on the front wall) symbolises the joining of the South and North Tyne Rivers. New rowing club boathouse from the Boathouse pub
Tyne Amateur Rowing Club, based at Water Row, Newburn was founded in 1852 and is amongst the oldest sporting clubs in England and said to have the longest and best stretch of river for rowing in the north of England. The old clubhouse Image was demolished in June 2015 and its replacement is due for completion at the start of January 2016.

'The Tyne River God', Tyne Rowing Club, Newburn
Sculpted head on the front wall of Image The Tyne River God symbolises in his beard the uniting of South and North Tyne and bears flaming coals on his head which, together with the pick and shovel, birds, fish and nets represent Tyneside's early industries.
