Built in 1832 and originally with an additional four one-bedroomed cottages at the end nearest the camera. These were demolished in 1959 to make an entrance to the Vallum housing estate. http://heddonhistory.weebly.com/village-property.html

This hut houses the local branch of the sometimes derided, but thoroughly worthy, Women's Institute.

2015 is the centenary of the foundation of the Women's Institute in Britain. The Women's Institute movement in Britain started in 1915. During the First World War it was formed to encourage countrywomen to get involved in growing and preserving food to help to increase the supply of food to the war-torn nation. The first WI in Britain was formed under the auspices of the Agricultural Organisation Society (AOS). AOS Secretary, John Nugent Harris, appointed Canadian Madge Watt to set up WIs across the UK. The location shown is where Hadrian's Wall Path (National Trail) going from east to west turns from Towne Gate, the road through the village, onto the path of Chare Bank (ahead) which follows part of the ditch line of the Roman Vallum. The finger post on the left points out the trail direction as well as a short detour (right) towards the preserved section of the Roman Wall on the east side of Heddon village. The route of the trail through the village has recently (2017) been augmented by three large information boards which show a suitably oriented map and some historical information.
