Blagdon Estate, South Lodge.
The Blagdon white bulls. These were painted black during the war years. The South entrance is normally the main entrance to Blagdon Hall, but has been closed because the latest opencast workings cut across the South drive.

South entrance to Blagdon Hall
A fine pair of lodges, with the gate pillars topped by a handsome pair of white bulls. It appears that this entrance is no longer used for access to the Hall as the driveway has been severed by open cast mining.

South Lodge near Stannington
The south entrance to Blagdon Hall. A typically refined classical job by James Wyatt, in 1786, consisting of a pair of octagonal lodges linked by a Doric screen. The gate piers are surmounted by white-painted bulls (supporter animals of the Ridleys, whose seat this is). The elegant niches and festoons on the lodges are characteristic of Wyatt's classical style. Grade II* listed.

Blagdon Hall Gates
Blagdon Hall was built between 1735 and 1752 by Matthew White, a Newcastle merchant, whose descendants, the Ridley family, still live in the hall. The setting sun has made this view of the gates rather more forbidding than they actually are!
