Designed by Alfred Waterhouse for the Prudential Life Assurance Company in 1891. The same architect was responsible for Image Unlike most of the buildings in Newcastle, for this prominent site he used red sandstone, red brick and red granite topped with a green Lakeland slate roof. The ground floor is currently a restaurant and pizzeria, (Portofino).

Alfred Waterhouse could probably have made a decent living solely on the back of his commissions from Prudential Assurance. This is yet another, typically very red, example, built in 1891-97. Red sandstone, brick and granite. Grade II listed. Occupied by an Italian restaurant, Portofino, at the time.

A remnant of the late 18th C street planning of Mosley Street/Dean Street - see Image The brick rear, the roof and the chimney stack are all original, but the front was refaced in an 18th C decorative style fashionable in the mid-19th C. The vocabulary is that standardly employed for countless grand commercial buildings throughout the Victorian and Edwardian periods, but the elements here are very satisfyingly arranged. The upper storey has giant columns and pilasters and swags. The rounded entrance bay also has red granite columns and a balustraded parapet topped with vases.
