River Lee Navigation: Pickett's Lock
Pickett's Lock is No. 15 on the Navigation and the original structure was rebuilt in 1855. It is capable of taking barges of up to 130 tons. There was a lot of surface weed in the lock at the time which is a hazard for boat users to contend with.

Geese coming up at Pickett's Lock
As I was approaching, the lady of the lock keeper's cottage was enticing the geese from the lower pound into the lock. I was too far away to see how this was done. She then shut the lower gate, raised half a paddle and withdrew to the cottage for a bit. She evidently preferred her domestic geese to be in the upper pound. The geese seemed unfazed by this, probably a familiar procedure. This is doubtless the same flock as seen in Image

Approaching Pickett's Lock on the River Lee Navigation
The original River Lea flowed 70 miles from Leagrove Marsh near Luton to the River Thames at Bow Creek. The River Lee Act of 1766 provided for the construction of 15 new cuts to straighten the course of the river by eliminating loops which made it difficult to navigate. This is one of those cuts and hence it is a navigation rather than a river. The Lea passes a little further to the east here. Historically the river is spelled Lea while the navigation is Lee. Pickett's Lock is just ahead beyond the narrow boats.
