Entrance to former Crouch End station
View northward on Crouch End Road: the station was to the right, on the ex-GN (King's Cross) - Finsbury Park (to right) - Highgate - Edgware/High Barnet/Alexandra Palace (to left) 'Northern Heights' lines. The station was closed 3/7/54, along with the Alexandra Palace branch from Highgate, but goods traffic continued Finsbury Park - High Barnet until 1/10/62 - Edgware until 1/6/64, then for access of empty stock to Highgate Wood Sidings until 29/9/70. The Alexandra Palace branch was prepared for electrification before World War Two, but never fulfilled, while between 1939 and 1941 the High Barnet branch and the Edgware line as far as Mill Hill East were connected to the LPTB Northern Line via East Finchley, Highgate (Underground station) and Archway. The large board '4744' commemorates the LNER N2 class 0-6-2T now preserved, which was one of the many that used to work the Northern Heights trains.

Crouch End railway station (site), Greater London
Opened in 1881 by the Great Northern Railway on the line from Finsbury Park to Alexandra Palace, this station closed in 1954. View east towards Stroud Green and Finsbury Park from the site of the street-level station building. Both platforms were still extant when this image was taken, and the former line is now a public footpath. For further information, see http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/c/crouch_end/index.shtml.
