View of the John Gay Conservation Centre in Highgate West Cemetery
For the first time since the 1970s, Highgate West Cemetery has, since Saturday 11th July, opened for free roaming rather than guided tours, which enabled me to explore more of the paths which the tours don't cover. Looking south-southwest.

Church Behind
The church of St Michael can be seen behind the catacombs here at Highgate Cemetery. We were shown round the catacombs but not allowed to take photos inside.

The tomb of George Wombwell, Highgate Cemetery
Highgate West Cemetery opened in 1839 and the East Cemetery in 1860. This is in the old West Cemetery which is closed to casual visitors but can be visited by guided tours. This is the tomb of George Wombwell, menagarist who died in 1850. The lion was named Nero. His animals sometimes were out of control and killed spectators and even members of his own family (but not Nero who was rather soppy). George Wombwell lived from 1777 to 1850, and ever the showman, he exhibited his coffin to the public before he had to make use of it.
