Mouth of disused tunnels, Highgate Underground station
In the 1930s London Underground conceived the Northern Heights programme, in which the already-complicated Northern Line would add more routes, taking over (inter alia) the former Great Northern branch line from Finsbury Park up to Highgate and on to Alexandra Palace. Highgate was to have been a junction point of routes similar to Camden Town now, with the existing deep platforms interchanging with another route at surface level, the latter seen here. The coming of the Second World War saw the plans abandoned.
