Drinking fountain, Bounds Green Road, Wood Green
Shown here is the square base (with four drinking fountains) of a tall obelisk in Bounds Green Road, Wood Green. It was erected in memory of Wood Green resident and anti-slavery campaigner Catherine Smithies, founder of the Band of Mercy animal welfare youth group (1824) and ultimately claimed by the Animal Liberation Front as its inspiration. Most references sources agree that Smithies forename was Catherine; however the inscription clears spells out Catharine! The obelisk and drinking fountain is Grade II listed. More on the structure may be found at http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-488455-obelisk-memorial-drinking-fountain-wood-.
