View from the level crossing at Marsh Lane
The railway line from Stratford to Broxbourne via Waltham Cross was opened by the Northern & Eastern Railway on 15th September 1840. What is now Northumberland Park station was opened on the same day, but only as a halt named Marsh Lane after the country lane to Tottenham Marshes on which it is situated. In June 1852 the station was renamed Park station. In 1923 operation passed to the London & North Eastern Railway and the station was renamed to its current title, Northumberland Park on 1st July 1923. The lines south from Cheshunt via Northumberland Park were not electrified until 5th May 1969. Around 1961 the marshalling yard was closed and the site used for the Northumberland Park Depot of London Underground's Victoria line. This is the only above ground location where Victoria line stock can be seen and the depot is joined to the main Victoria line at a junction north of Seven Sisters Tube station. This is the view northwards from the level crossing on Marsh Lane. The Network Rail workers were cutting down lineside vegetation. The next station in this direction is Angel Road. This was a thoroughly wet and miserable day.
