Banksy in Stoke Newington
This cartoon of the royal family was created by the graffiti artist Banksy for the cover of Blur's single Crazy Beat in 2003. The stencil adorns the side of a private block of flats in Church Street and was painted with the owner's permission, becoming a popular landmark for local residents and visitors alike. Nevertheless, a month after this image was taken, Hackney Council succeeded in covering most of it in black paint in the name of cleaning up graffiti. "The council's position is not to make a judgement call on whether graffiti is art or not. Our task is to keep Hackney's streets clean." Nice one Hackney.
