Road Sign on Traffic Island at Southgate Circus
Original road sign on traffic island at Southgate Circus. This sign was erected by Southgate Borough Council and is a reminder of the time when there were separate councils for Enfield, Southgate and Edmonton, before being amalgamated to form the London Borough of Enfield many years ago. This large road junction used to be called Fiveways, on account of the fact that five roads met here. After the M25 was constructed most of the heavy traffic no longer need to travel through Southgate, which was a great improvement. Before the M25 all the heavy traffic used to travel down the Bourne to Hedge Lane and then to the North Circular Road at the Cambridge Roundabout.
