Douglas Water village
The photograph was taken from the embankment of the former Douglas Colliery railway branch. This once crossed the road through the village on a bridge and continued straight ahead to join the Lanark to Muirkirk line. The latter passed behind the cottages on the left and originally passed under the road to run into the local railway station, which was called Ponfeigh. The waste land on the right was the site of several rows of miners' cottages. The mine managers and deputies lived in the houses behind the trees in the middle right distance.
