New Lanark
New Lanark was founded in the late eighteenth century as an industrial village based on cotton mills. Robert Owen later worked to transform New Lanark into a model industrial utopia, with enlightened management providing decent accommodation and eliminating the harsh working conditions prevalent in so many industrial enterprises in central Scotland at this time. However, it is doubtful whether working 10 hours a day for 6 days a week, with two days annual leave would be deemed "enlightened" nowadays!

Bellcote, New Buildings
The bellcote, which was originally on Mill No 1, was relocated to here (New Buildings) between 1825 and 1867, and was used to summon the workers to New Lanark's mills. The whole of New Buildings is Category A listed http://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB37045.
There are lots of twigs and other material present, suggesting something has been nesting here in the more recent past.

New Lanark, Inside a Typical Mill Worker's Cottage
A recreation of a typical mill worker's cottage at New Lanark from around 1820. At that time, almost 2500 people lived in New Lanark. Many had just a single room with "set-in" beds and "hurlie beds". The open fire was at the heart of the home. A, dresser, kist (chest), a simple wooded table and small stools known as "creepies" were usually the only other items of furniture. Tallow candles and oil lamps provided the lighting and water was carried in from wells in the village.

New Lanark
Robert Owen's model village and factory complex on the River Clyde. Now a world heritage site. The building with the cupola and oculus is New Buildings that is worker's housing. The stonework on the right is the edge of the Mill 3 engine house that drove the mill via a rope-race over the leat (lade). It was definitely the season of mellow fruitfulness and I would have preferred some punchier lighting.
