Strathaven, Avondale or Gavler's Castle
This ruined castle seems to have three alternative names. As well as taking the town's name of Strathaven, it is also known as Gavler's Castle ( see http://www.douglashistory.co.uk/history/Places/galvers_castle.htm ) or Avondale Castle. It is a scheduled ancient monument and dates from about the mid C14th, replacing a wooden fortress of about 100 years earlier date. See its own little website here http://www.strathavencastle.t83.net

Strathaven's castle from Bridge Street
The Powmillon Burn runs right alongside Bridge Street at this point. The bridge seen directly ahead carries the burn under Stonehouse Road (or possibly Kirk Street depending where it changes its name). Beyond this, sitting up on a bank, are the remains of Strathaven's castle - see Image] and http://www.strathavencastle.t83.net for more details.
