Old French inscription and cresset
"Robert de Bilhemore chiualer qe fist faire cette eglice de nouele gist icy dieu de salme eit merci amen".
The brass in the chancel of St Mary's Church at Lower Gravenhurst may be translated "Here lies Robert de Bilhemore, knight, who caused this church to be made anew; may God have mercy on his soul. Amen." Sir Robert died around 1360.
Beneath is an ancient cresset lamp with five recesses for wicks which would burn oil to light the chancel.

Pulpit and screen at Lower Gravenhurst Church
The pulpit at St Mary's Church with its tester, or sounding board, is Jacobean (dating from the first quarter of the 17th century). To the right is part of the 15th-century rood screen with remnants of its floral decoration, and in the foreground can be seen the beautiful medieval floor tiles. The iron bracket attached to the central arch of the screen formerly held an hour glass for timing the sermons.

Interior of St Mary's Church, Lower Gravenhurst
Pevsner comments on the unusual absence of a chancel arch in this 14th-century church, and describes this as a "pleasantly unimproved interior" with particularly pleasant old flooring. The roof has thin tiebeams and kingposts, and the 15th-century screen retains traces of its original floral decoration.
