Ruins of Houghton House
A visit to what is left of the 17th century mansion, Houghton House, requires a slight digression from the main route that passes nearby, the Marston Vale Timberland Trail. The Bedfordshire Greensand Ridge route also coincides with this route here.
On this occasion, nearby tree cover provided some welcome relief from the sun and heat on a particularly hot day for England with temperatures around 34 degrees centigrade.

Originally built in 1621 by Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, but she died of smallpox on 25 September 1621, not long after its completion. This house provided the inspiration for House Beautiful in John Bunyan's famous work 'The Pilgrims Progress'.
