Ruins of Houghton House, on the ridge just north of Ampthill, Bedfordshire, it is about 8 miles south of Bedford. Originally built in 1621 by Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, but she died of smallpox on 25 September 1621, not long after its completion. This house provided the inspiration for House Beautiful in John Bunyan's famous work 'The Pilgrims Progress'.
