Unusual
This is the church tower for the parish church at Elstow. Unusual as it is built separate from the main body of the church. Apparently when it was built in the medieval period, the ground was very boggy and the builders were not convinced that the footings would support the tower. Similar scenario to the church in nearby Martson Moretaine.

Hillersdon House, Elstow
An information board states: The ruins are the remains of a mansion converted from the cloisters of Elstow Abbey, a large Benedictine nunnery on this site until surrendered to the Crown in 1539 at the dissolution of the monasteries. The standing remains are part of the main wing of the mansion, mostly built for Thomas Hillersdon in 1625 from the previous west range of the 14th century Abbey cloisters and adjoining the church. The mansion was mostly dismantled between 1767 and 1781 after the deaths of three Hillersdon sisters.
