Wall near Sally Port Gardens
The wall on the left is part of the Napoleanoic defensive ditches that leads from Fort Amherst in Chatham, through Brompton and onwards to Lower Gillingham. This section of the wide open ditches leads towards Wood Street. The ditch is very wide here because the defensive soldiers needed a section in the ditch to 'sallie forth' to attach the attackers.

Field of fire, Brompton Road
This wild patch of weeds and trees are on the line of a military ditch. In 1758, the Chatham Lines of Defence were built. Over a mile long, they stretched across the neck of the dockyard peninsula, from Chatham Reach, south of the dockyard, across to Gillingham Reach on the opposite side towards Fort Amhurst. Some parts of the ditch still exist - Image
