Camden Street, Maidstone
Photographed from looking towards the main gate and surrounding wall of Maidstone Prison, Camden Street is that rarity in the modern townscape - a car free street. Maidstone Prison was constructed using Kentish Ragstone from a local quarry. The original design of the prison was intended to house 552 prisoners, including 62 female inmates, with the first 141 prisoners arriving in March 1819. The perimeter wall seen here is one of the few original parts of the prison which remain. The gate is just to the left of the notice - see http://www.geograph.ie/photo/3080722

Her Majesty's Prison, Maidstone
Constructed from local Kentish ragstone the prison was completed in 1819. They seemed to be taking delivery of a new portacabin this Sunday afternoon. I was going to take a picture of the visitors' door (often seen on "Birds of a Feather") but the queue outside, while adding to the picture, probably wouldn't have appreciated it... It can be seen in these other photos http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2049429 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2049425

Campden Street
A row of terraced houses on pedestrianised section of Camden Street. Maidstone prison to rear. An entrance to the prison is just near the end of the street and probably the reason it has been pedestrianised, along with parallel Woollett Street.
