Seen from the pedestrianised Camden Street, this view looks across County Road to the main gate of Maidstone Prison. Maidstone Prison was constructed using Kentish Ragstone from a local quarry. The original design of the prison was intended to house 552 prisoners, including 62 female inmates, with the first 141 prisoners arriving in March 1819. The perimeter wall seen here is one of the few original parts of the prison which remain.
