The Alma has been a pub since 1837 and was originally known as the Candle House, as the landlord used to light candles so that the hop pickers could find the pub in the dark.

Viewed from Eastling Road. The building has been a pub since 1837. It was originally known as The Candle House, said to be so named because the landlord used to put candles in the windows to guide hop pickers to his establishment.
