The church is set back from the road, next to Divan Court. The stone slab next to the (broken) stile is the top step of a flight of three out of the churchyard - most odd, presumably one was expected to jump down, unless it was originally intended as a mounting block.

Steps out of the churchyard
As may be seen in this pic http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/240025 there are no steps on the other side of the wall so I wonder if this was built as a mounting block.
