Rise Like Lions
Liam Curtain’s artwork ‘Rise’ surrounds the ground floor of Transport House, a building developed on the site of the former TGWU Headquarters. It is a tribute to the strong trade unionist tradition in Salford. It takes as its inspiration ‘Rise like Lions’, a line from Percy Shelley's 'The Masque of Anarchy' written in 1819 in response to the Peterloo Massacre. The artwork honours all those who have defended just causes and who have taken collective action to achieve their aims. The quote reads, : “Rise like lions after slumber, in unvanguishable number, shake your chains to earth like dew, which in sleep had fallen on you. Ye are many they are few.” Rise was commissioned by Irwell Valley Housing Association in collaboration with CITE (Commissions in the Environment). It is part of the Irwell Sculpture Trail http://www.irwellsculpturetrail.co.uk/ It is lit by coloured LEDs at night.
