Paragon Mill, Jersey Street, Manchester
Vigorous red brick with stone trim and some Baroque details such as the open pediment. Built by a Mr Porter of the Fine Cotton Spinners' Engineering Division, 1911-13. Underneath the brick is steel and concrete. Pevsner notes that the mill was "designed to house electrically powered mules, with electric motors housed in towers ... in the first generation of those purpose-built for electricity, which was supplied by the Corporation." Grade II* listed. Almost all the 'windows' here are not real but painted. The plan is to convert it to flats.

Mills at Ancoats
Rochdale Canal in foreground. The big 1912 block is Royal Mills with attached Sedgwick Mill (1818-1820). This was McConnel and Kennedy's Complex. Next along is Murray's complex and Beehive is beyond the street furniture. Anybody remotely interested in textile mill history needs "Cotton Mills in Greater Manchester".

Royal and Sedgwick Mills
McConnel and Kennedy's site. Royal Mill (left) dates from 1912 and replaced Old Mill of 1798. It abuts the eight storey Sedgwick Mill of 1818-1820. The door in to Sedgwick (next to the guy on his mobile) leads in to the former beam engine house (Boulton and Watt). The flash of green visible through that door is a replica flywheel in the original recess in the wall that accommodated the engine's flywheel (a thoughtful touch).

Ancoats, Cutting Room Square
Part of the redevelopment of the Ancoats district of Manchester, Cutting Room Square is the centrepiece of the new public realm for Ancoats: the first public square ever to be built in the area. It is oriented around 5 towering photographs of the former cutting and pattern rooms of the adjacent Royal Mills.

Mills at Ancoats
Alongside the unrestored Rochdale canal. The mills are now apartments and the canal is navigable. These are a well illustrated group of early textile mills and were painted by L S Lowry.
