Davyhulme Millennium Nature Reserve from the air
This now wooded part of the sprawling Davyhulme sewage works complex by the Manchester Ship Canal was closed and converted to a nature reserve in 2000. This was as a direct result of a 1998 European Community Directive which prohibited the dumping of sewage sludge at sea.

Sludge Hoppers, Davyhulme Wastewater Treatment Works
The wharf and sludge hoppers were part of the Davyhulme Wastewater Treatment Works which operated alongside the Manchester Ship Canal from 1894. The area is now part of the Davyhulme Millennium Nature Reserve which was opened in 1999. It now provides a mixed landscape of wetland, woods, water features & open land and is a designated Site of Biological Importance.
