The wharf and sludge hoppers were part of the Davyhulme Wastewater Treatment Works which operated alongside the Manchester Ship Canal from 1894. The area is now part of the Davyhulme Millennium Nature Reserve which was opened in 1999. It now provides a mixed landscape of wetland, woods, water features & open land and is a designated Site of Biological Importance
