Morrisons supermarket, Failsworth
This supermarket is on the site of Marlborough No. 2 Mill that was built in 1908 as a cotton spinning mill. The architecture is a pastiche of local mill architecture and includes a hotel de ville style tower, a stylised engine house and the former mill's name at roof level. It is a new build and not a re-used existing mill.

Morrisons - pastiche on a mill
This supermarket is on the site of Marlborough No. 2 Mill and is a rough copy of the architectural style. The projecting section in the distance with tall blind arcading is meant to represent the engine house. I suppose it is in more in keeping with the area than the typical anonymous box. Marlborough No. 2 had been built in 1908 to a design by architect P S Stott. The spindleage in 1915 was 127,048 and power was by George Saxon steam engine of 1700 horsepower. Production ceased in 1955 and the mill was later used as a discount store before being demolished to make way for this supermarket.
