Once a Record Shop
This coffee shop - now one of the numerous refreshment places in the city - is the site of one of Manchester's most famous record sellers of the 1960s - RARE RECORDS - who, along with Forsyth's, were the pre-eminent suppliers of classical records and importers of what is now called 'World Music', especially hard-to-get European and American labels. They later moved to John Dalton Street before closing when the owner retired. Happily, Forsyth's is still going strong, nearby on Deansgate.

Barton Square and Barton Arcade
The arcade's southern doorway opens out onto Barton Square, a lane leading into St Ann's Square. The building on the right is named "Acresfield", reminding us that in the 17th century, Deans Gate and Market Street Lane had been laid out but this area really was a field called Acres Field and it was the site of an annual fair.
