Elisabeth House, St Peter's Square, Manchester
By Cruickshank & Seward, 1959-60. A square complex with central courtyard, shops at ground floor, and offices projecting above, all nestling under an oversailing concrete canopy. The shops are boarded up and it has been empty for some years now while schemes to replace it with (inevitably) a tower have come to nothing. Refurbishment would be sufficient, unless a quality scheme worthy of the location emerges. On the left is the Cenotaph: Image Further left is one of the CCTV cameras now ubiquitous in British cities. Fellow Geographer Keith Williamson informs me that, at February 2012, demolition of this building is almost complete.

St Peter's Square
Following the refurbishment of St Peter's Square the latest addition on the eastern side of the square is a new water and garden feature with stone seating around the edges. To the left is the office block, One St Peter's Square Image, which replaced the former Elisabeth House Image which once included the excellent Dutch Pancake House. Across Oxford Street on the corner of Lower Mosley Street is Peter House Image completed in 1958 on land that had been mostly derelict since the war. Opposite it is the Midland Hotel. The Cenotaph having been moved, St Peter's Cross, now returned to more or less its original position, has a clear view down Lower Mosley Street with trams going either side of it.
