River Mersey at Northenden Weir and Salmon Ladder
Looking across the River Mersey from the Didsbury bank. The Environment Agency constructed a fish pass here in 2003 to enable salmon and other fish to negotiate this previously impassable weir. This has resulted in salmon spawning in the upper reaches of the River Goyt (a tributary of the Mersey) on a regular basis. The fish pass runs under the gratings in front of the railings.(see Image). Also see (Image) for a view from the opposite bank after heavy rainfall.

Tatton Arms
The Tatton Arms has been closed since 2007. It was originally the Boat House Inn and dates back to the 19th century. At one time it was a Chef & Brewer house. See links to old photographs at http://pubs-of-manchester.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/tatton-arms-boat-house-inn-boat-lane.html Plans to develop the former pub into nine apartments and build an additional 14 houses on green belt land were turned down in 2017 https://wythenshawereporter.wordpress.com/2017/02/24/tatton-arms-development-bid-on-northenden-green-belt-thrown-out-by-councillors/ but that may not be the end of the proposal https://www.placenorthwest.co.uk/news/tatton-arms-refusal-set-for-review/

Former pub, Boat Lane, Manchester
Once the Tatton Arms, by James Redford, 1874. A fine building, too good to be left to rot for fifteen years. In poignant contrast to this scene, according to an account from 1920, "the banks of the river became a busy bustling Bacchanalium, where boating men and beanfesters made boisterous revels."
